Product Development Performance Improvement

The Product Development department of our client designs and develop gas turbine engines and packages for the industrial power generation sector. Based in the UK, there are 2 further locations, one in Sweden and another in the USA.
Issues
Our client were getting consistently late delivery on all their development projects. This was highlighted by the 12 months delay on an enhanced engine which was originally planned to be completed in 3 years. The perception of the management & business excellence teams was that this was due to poor planning of development projects and weak management skills.
Objectives
After initial discussions with Lausanne Consulting, a 2 week Initial Opportunity Review (IOR) was undertaken to determine causes underlying the poor project delivery performance and agree a course of action. The IOR identified the following issues: weak planning and control systems, excessive unproductive meetings, little capacity planning, low levels of accountability, passive management style. The key determinant our clients decision to engage Lausanne to assist in resolution of the problems identified was the unique ability of Lausanne Delta Approach® to impact on management behaviours and attitudes rather than merely the technical processes. The agreed project objectives were, to increase the project delivery performance, by improving the labour productivity & disciplines and to deliver annualised benefits greater than 650k€.
Benefits
Over the 30 week programme called Engineering for Success, Lausanne reorganised the management structure to move from a product driven to a customer focused organisation. Created a capacity planning model which enabled management to ensure that project plans were correctly aligned with budget objectives, created an objective management control system which in conjunction with in excess 1200 hours of management training enabled management to ensure more consistent delivery of project activities.
